Since 2018, we have given a voice to Newark’s greenspaces.
Making a difference to Newark
Protecting green spaces
We had to prevent the century-old trees and green space at the Library Garden from being destroyed and turned into a car park. And we did just that.
Thanks to the support of our community, collectively we achieved Newark and Sherwood’s most signed petition, hosted the biggest peaceful protests that Newark has ever seen and lobbed Newark and Sherwood District Council to prevent the destruction of our urban green oasis.
Now the site can be enjoyed for future generations of people and wildlife. Read the full story here.
Enhancing green spaces
You may have noticed a bit more activity in the library gardens this year. Well, we have some exciting news!
Our 'Friends of Newark Library Gardens' group has been busy making plans and working with Newark and Sherwood District Council on enhancing this community asset for the future.
Focusing on your feedback, we will be working hard to enhance this area for wildlife whilst creating peaceful, accessible areas for future events and community groups to use.

Providing guidance to residents
We’re being approached by many local residents who are concerned about local tree works, damage to green spaces, the threat of development or potential wildlife crimes being committed.
We give out free support and guidance to these residents, helping them to protect and take care of green spaces and wildlife dear to them.

Supporting local campaigns
Newark’s growing appetite for protecting and enhancing local green spaces has spearheaded the birth of community groups across the district.
We’re supporting community groups with guidance and support based on our experiences and group expertise ranging from environmental law, campaigning, working with landowners, running campaigns and lobbying local councillors.

Uniting our community
Community spirit is rife at our events. From hosting family picnics to art events and mass peaceful protests we’ve been bringing our community together in the heart of our green spaces.
We’ve seen friendships form, people connecting with nature, families engaging their children in their first peaceful protests and people sharing and using their skills.

Challenging local politics
Working with environmental solicitors, experts and nature charities we’ve been lobbying both local and district councils to honour their climate emergency declaration and take action.
We’ve been challenging poor decisions made by local MPs and councillors which are detrimental to our green spaces and wildlife and are working hard to influence them to ramp up commitments in turning Newark net-zero and more resilient for people and wildlife.
